A Day Among Giants: Our Satellite Communication Adventure at BSNL Yeoor Hills

Image
The date was November 6th, 2025 . A palpable buzz of anticipation filled the air as we, the 2nd to 4th-year students of the SPIT EXTC department, arrived at the BSNL Satellite Earth Station high up in Yeoor Hills, Thane. We weren't just visiting a facility; we were entering the heart of India's global telecommunication network. As we stepped out, the sheer scale was the first thing that grabbed our attention. Massive satellite dishes pointed silently toward the sky, connecting us to satellites orbiting thousands of kilometres away. This was the place where the nation's digital arteries begin their long journey. Tracing the Signal's Journey Our story began with understanding the fundamental architecture. It's a precisely choreographed dance between Earth and space: The Uplink Power-Up: We learned about the Uplink Chain . Our data, starting from a modest 70 MHz  signal at the Modem , is sent to the Upconverter and then boosted by the High Power Amplifier (HPA) . I...

From Analog to Digital: How a Low-Pass Filter Clears the Static

Image
- Het Gala Technology has vastly improved how we communicate, starting with the first long-distance phone call in 1877. We've moved from unreliable analog systems, which were prone to static and broken lines, to the digital communication we use today. Digital communication, which became common in the 1990s, improved call clarity and reliability by converting continuous analog sound waves into a series of ones and zeros. Our voices are recorded digitally and then converted back to an analog signal when someone listens to it. The more samples taken during this conversion, the more accurately the reconstructed sound matches the original. A key component in this process is a low-pass filter . This filter helps improve call quality by allowing the essential frequencies of human speech (300 Hz - 3,300 Hz) to pass through while blocking unwanted high-frequency noise. I have written a code in PYTHON to illustrate how the noise can be removed, though in my code I have reduced the effect of...
